Art #1

This painting is used as a centerpiece in Andrei Tarkovsky's Solaris. Which is right now in the running with Kurosawa's Ikiru as the best pre-2005 movie that I have seen so far in this year. There were moments in Solaris that were heavenly (how else can I describe some of the scenes?).

Also the movie's conclusion quotes Rembrandt's The Return of the Prodigal Son.
Though the painting was the creation of a Dutch artist it seems to have become part of Russia's cultural heritage, probably because it is on display in St. Petersburg's Hermitage Musuem.
